Shadow-Sworn Herald of Entropy

Shadow-Sworn Herald of Entropy

It just might have been the case that even before the Neverborn finally held the 100 Solar Essences in their dark grasp, they may have had their sleeping gazes fixed on certain mortals as future hosts. Garrisoned Vale was likely one them.

He was never a good man. He was never a hero. He was never a saint. He was never destined to be. Garrisoned Vale was the son of a scavenger lord, raised in the morally-ambiguous tradition of the Guild, but less than inclined to purse his father's obsession with commerce and trade. Not that the young Garrison didn't watch wide-eyed at the exchange of jade over these trinkets his father dug up from ruins in the lands between the Yanaze and the Silver. The youth was as drawn to wealth as surely as his kin, but when his father returned to Nexus, Garrison trolled Firewander and Nighthammer roughing up other youths for their coin. It was so much easier than all that digging and haggling. A fist and a knife - the fastest way to get rich.

Adolescence only compounded Garisson's penchant for crime. Shrewd enough even as a young man to avoid biting the hand that fed, he dutifully accompanied his father and never let the man know about the illicit activities of his son. He became more than mere thug through this influence, learning more than the average citizen of the Confederation, and becoming familiarized with the rudiments of the occult. This education produced an evolution of villainy in Garisson.

In manhood, he assumed a half-hearted dedication to his father's former craft, but never aspired to enter the Guild. Rather, he used the cover of scavenger to conceal a burgeoning career as a bandit. Drawing those awed by his family's money and his ruthless dedication to more money, he assembled a competent network of criminals who regularly waylaid expeditions lead by Garrison. Taking home both his finder's fee and all the goods, Garrison became a figure in the black market.

Then he finally overstepped his bounds and the wife of a prominent member of the Guild died during a botched raid of an expedition. His cover was investigated, then blown, and Garrison fled Nexus. His family's entire holdings were seized as compensation to his victims. His father died penniless from the stress. His mother lived the remainder of her short life begging on the street. Garrison just turned his attention to finding a new source of money.

He went south then, stabbing at the Marukani towns and villages bordering the Grey River. Merelken, to the west of Denandsor, was also prey for his raiders. When he had picked those trade routs as clean as he could without attracting military attention, he turned his eyes to the biggest prize in the region - the jade convoys departing the Realm-controlled town of Jades. That was his fatal mistake.

He partnered with a cutthroat Outcaste, Shattered Wall, and his band of river pirates to hit one of the freighters. Shattered Wall got Garrison and a dozen raiders onboard. No one knew there were three members of House Nellens, all young Dragon-Blooded, escorting the shipment of Jade. The scions of the Realm laid waste to the raiders and then took their outrage out on Garrison. He bones were shattered. His skin was rended. His internal organs ruptured. The power of the Dragons pulverized the mortal. Dying, they tossed him into the hold and promised they would be back to finish the job.

Pulped in a growing pool of his blood, Garrison waited to die, hoped to die before the trio of Nellens' returned. Instead, a figure, nothing but an echo of life and shadow, found him there. The decision was simple. The task was more than Garrison had ever considered, but nothing he wasn't willing to do. When the Nellens' came to fetch him, they found themselves faced with a newly empowered Deathknight thick with his Deathlord's power. Only one survived, and Nellens Okotal carried the name and identity of the new Deathknight to the Realm, where the Immaculates recorded his name and the Bronze Faction learned of his origin.

The Deathknight once known as Garrisoned Vale left the freighter engulfed in flames and wandered towards Thorns until he finally stumbled through a Shadowland pocket and was met by his expectant master, the Mask of Winters. The Deathlord opened the tainted earth below them and they plunged into the Labyrinth. There, he gave his name to the greatest evil imaginable, and emerged Shadow-Sworn, a Herald of Entropy.

This new Deathknight, more sane and reliable than some of the Mask's favored circle of Deathknights, immediately returned to those he knew and obliterated any record of his name, including the systematic murder of a dozen bandits who called him Garrison by accident. Shattered Wall nearly met his own end, but the tortured visage of the man he once knew left him speechless and saved his life.

Now Shadow-Sworn Herald of Entropy is an agent of discord, directed by the hand of the Mask of Winters. He is brutally effective, well-connected with independent forces of murder and crime, and shockingly self-sufficient. His education and versing in the Occult has endeared him to the Mask of Winters, and created a sort of sorcery counterpoint to the Daybreak, Seven-Degreed Physician (who Shadow-Sworn has a mutual respect and alliance with). Although he has never combined the forces of his deathlord with his personal bandits, he would not hesitate to do so if a concerted military effort was required of him. In the meantime, he nurtures a desire to hit Jades and take it for his master, but ultimately to punish the people of Nexus by crushing the entire Confederation's peaceful accord and throwing the lives of all into bloodshed and war.

Allies:

Faded Horizon, Air Outcaste Sorcerer and Sycophant of the Mask of Winters

Herald customarily refers to Faded Horizon as "that pale worm", although he tries to avoid disparagement to the sorcerer's face. In return for Herald turning over sorcerous trinkets and regeants he encounters from raiding, Horizon uses sorcery to supplement the power of Herald's mortal and undead forces.

Notable spells: Ritual of Elemental Empowerment

The Seven-Degreed Physician of Black Maladies, Daybreak Caste

The Physician is the only member of the Mask's favorite circle who Herald can stand. Herald frequently brings bodies to his allies' manse and tests new war machines in return for necromantic support, repair to his armor, and future promises of permanent war machines.
